DECC Company Recognized with National Award
Benefit Offerings to Employees Earned Local Company National Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 26, 2006

Grand Rapids, MI – The DECC Company’s Jim Evans was recognized in a September issue of Employee Benefit News, having achieved an Employee Benefit News “Benefit Leadership Award 2006.” As CFO of The DECC Company, Evans earned the VSP People First Award for his transformation of the benefits program for his employees and management. With a company of 50 employees, Evans creatively worked to reduce health care costs for employees by changing plan structure, which provided them with lower employee premiums, deductible reimbursements, HRA reimbursements, Flexible spending accounts (FSA) and an emphasis on wellness by sponsoring 50% of a membership to the YMCA and cash bonuses for those participants who met their quarterly wellness goals.

Evans brought his company into the national spotlight.  Of the five organizations recognized, The DECC Company proceeded to be the smallest in size by a considerable margin, as well as the youngest company, having a 42-year history of leadership in the development of coating technology here in Grand Rapids.

The other companies recognized are all stand-out organizations in their industry including: Weyerhauser, an international forest product company with 54,000 employees in 18 countries; Deffenbaugh, the largest privately owned refuse firm in the Midwest with 19,000 employees; H-E-B, a grocery store chain with 300 stores and over 56,000 employees; and Wyeth, the leading global pharmaceutical company based out of New Jersey where they employ 26,000.

Evans worked closely with John Woodward of VML Insurance (VanTol, Magennis & Lang, Inc.) improving the new employee benefits plan. Evans set goals to establish and build trust with the employees, with an objective of keeping costs in mind. Woodward helped accomplish this for both The DECC Company and its employees by implementing an HRA, a flexible spending account and improved the 401k offering by increasing the company match by 100% and offered immediate vesting.

For more information on the DECC Company or VML Insurance please contact John Woodward at 616-949-4250 or john@vmlinsurance.com.
